The show was broadcast LIVE 12.00 Noon GMT on Thursday 14th February and featured
Chris Callard and
Stephen Watson from Transition Brighton and Hove (T.B.H.). The concept of Transition Towns was examined - it is tied in with the concept of Peak Oil and the related issue of climate change - inextricably linked with the dark blood of our industrialised Northern culture, Oil, and the fact that production has, realistically, probably peaked. It gives new meaning to "over the hill" as from possibly 2005 Oil production continues to increase while reserves are in decline. It has pretty much doubled (and just recently will have tripled) in price in recent years, and there is clearly worse to come. Transition Brighton and Hove, officially recognised by Brighton & Hove City Council is one of the largest and most ambitious of around 30 such projects in the UK.
Once again, it is not easy to understand the concept of Transition Towns at first, and there is controversy over the idea of Peak Oil, so visit the websites listed in the links section below this box. Essentially the key word is "resilience" in the face of system failures caused by freak storms, petrol strikes, distribution problems, and the possibility of catastrophic system collapses which can deprive us not just of mass consumer products but of basic services like energy, gas and electricity, and food that is mostly not produced locally.

also a very important blueprint for Transition Towns is available in the Kinsale Descent Action Plan which is the first study in setting out how Kinsale, a West Cork town of about 7,000 people, could make the transition from a high energy consumption town to a low energy one in graduated steps with the support of local authorities etc. The first link takes you to the full 55 page plan in pdf (portable document form) and the second to a 2 page summary of the plan in Word format:

Ben has performed there quite a few times and around town where there is a good piano.
